G is for Get

Because we got a new pet!
We have had several different types of pets in our family, but I think that birds are a favorite. I think they are the perfect pet. There are no diseases that pass between birds and humans except for the common cold, and they aren't aggressive except when they have been abused, so I don't have to worry about the kids being around them. Birds keep their mess contained to (or at least around, if you have a very messy bird) their cage. No finding "surprises" on the floor while you are trying to potty train. Just clean their cage once a week or so, and you are good to go. They have tons of personality and are just as easy to bond with as with a dog or a cat. But, they don't beg for food, escape down the street, or try to crawl in bed with you when you aren't looking.
It's been awhile since we've had a bird... our last one died peacefully of old age and we, like most pet owners, have needed to take some time before getting another one. But we spent a day last weekend at the zoo, and the kids were simply enraptured by the birds we saw. This was all the motivation that their daddy needed. So when we got home he went straight out and brought home a new family member.

So here is Chloe. She is still getting used to us, and isn't trained at all, so the fact that after less than 24 hours, she sat on his finger (and the kids', too, but I couldn't get a good picture of that, yet) is really impressive. We are pretty convinced of her intelligence and are looking forward to many enjoyable hours of watching and playing with our new parakeet.
